The African Charter Project – Civic Education Manual

This assignment focused on strengthening “Umgabulo The Demokhrasi (UTD)”, a civic education manual developed by African Youth Democracy Forum (AYDF), to enhance its usability in schools and in training-of-trainers contexts.

Building a Collaborative Review Process

The project was designed as a participatory and reflective process, anchored by two online workshops:

• Workshop 1: Established trust, clarified expectations, and explored current civic education challenges. Together, we examined the manual’s underlying theory of change and its intended impact in South African schools.

• Workshop 2: Created space to exchange feedback on the written review, refine key recommendations, and discuss practical steps for implementation.

A Comprehensive Written Review

Between the workshops, we produced a detailed written review that:

• Positioned UTD within broader civic education approaches

• Strengthened its theoretical grounding

• Provided concrete didactic and methodological recommendations

• Offered guidance for more interactive and learner-centred classroom use

Impact and Outcomes

The assignment contributed to:

• Improving the structure and clarity of the UTD manual

• Enhancing its practical relevance for educators and trainers

• Equipping AYDF with a clear roadmap for implementing recommendations

• Supporting the promotion of democratic values in South African schools

Overall, the process not only refined the manual itself but also strengthened AYDF’s capacity to inspire meaningful civic engagement among young people.
