Event in Berlin, 16 October – Peacebuilding: what art can do

Global crises and armed conflicts, inflation and economic and ecological challenges – is there still room for art and cultural work?

Elbarlament is using its 10th anniversary as an opportunity to discuss this question on the basis of its current cultural projects.

Seven years after the recapture of Mosul by the Iraqi army and the associated defeat of the so called Islamic State, and 10 years after the genocide of the Yazidis in Sinjar, mistrust between the ethnic and religious population groups in northern Iraq remains high. The ‘Mosul Tells’ project brings together young people from different backgrounds from Mosul and the region in puppet theatre and oral history workshops and revives long-forgotten forms of expression. The animated films and graphic novels produced provide insights into the cultural diversity of the Ninewa region and bring Iraq’s faded pop culture back to life.

Lebanon is also facing major social and political challenges: Upheavals and demonstrations, a devastating economic situation, the 2020 explosion in the port of Beirut and the impact of the general crisis and the current war. Lebanese civil society remains committed; it is driven by the desire for change and exchange. The ‘Creative Expression through Films’ project motivates people in Lebanon from different regional, social, cultural and educational backgrounds to creatively express their ideas and desires in video diaries, to raise their voices and process their realities.

The war in Ukraine has continued unabated since the beginning of the Russian invasion. With the ongoing war effort being the major preoccupation for Ukrainian decision makers and most ordinary citizens, what is the role and significance of art and cultural expression for Ukrainians – both inside the country and in the diaspora?

Weltweite Krisen und bewaffnete Konflikte, Inflation und ökonomische und ökologische Herausforderungen – braucht es da noch Raum für Kunst und Kulturarbeit?

Elbarlament nimmt sein zehnjähriges Jubiläum zum Anlass, die Frage anhand aktueller Kulturprojekte zu diskutieren.

Sieben Jahre nach der Rückeroberung Mosuls durch die Irakische Armee und die damit verbundene Niederlage des Islamischen Staats, und 10 Jahre nach dem Völkermord an den Yezid*innen in Sinjar ist das Mistrauen zwischen den ethnischen und religiösen Bevölkerungsgruppen im Nordirak weiterhin groß. Das Projekt “Mosul Tells” bringt junge Menschen mit verschiedenen Hintergründen aus Mosul und der Region in Puppentheater- und Oral History Workshops zusammen und lässt längst vergessene Ausdrucksformen wieder aufblühen. Die produzierten Animationsfilme und die Graphic Novel geben Einblicke in die kulturelle Vielfalt der Region Ninewa und bringen die verblasste Popkultur des Irak wieder zum Leben.

Auch der Libanon steht vor großen sozialen und politischen Herausforderungen: Umbrüche und Demonstrationen, eine verheerende wirtschaftliche Lage, die Explosion im Hafen von Beirut 2020 und die Auswirkungen der allgemeinen Krise sowie des aktuellen Kriegs. Die libanesische Zivilgesellschaft ist weiterhin engagiert; sie treibt der Wunsch nach Veränderung und sich auszutauschen an. Das Projekt “Creative Expression through Films” motiviert Menschen im Libanon mit unterschiedlichem regionalem, sozialem, kulturellem und Bildungshintergrund, ihre Ideen und Wünsche kreativ in Videotagebüchern auszudrücken, ihre Stimme zu erheben und ihre Realitäten zu verarbeiten.

In der Ukraine dauern die Kämpfe seit dem Beginn des russischen Angriffskriegs unvermindert an. Welche Rolle spielen in diesem Kontext Kunst und Kultur für die Ukrainer*innen, sowohl innerhalb des Landes als auch in der Diaspora?
