The Roadmap for a sustainable water resource management in Iraq is the result of a full year of workshops within the framework of the Clean Tigris project.

This version was submitted to the legislative bodies (the Iraqi Federal Parliament and Kurdistan Regional Parliament and all relevant parliamentary committees) as well as to the executive bodies of the Federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq.

This action plan agreement also includes a scheme that is the first of its kind to clarify the complex system of stakeholders in the water sector in Iraq. It highlights challenges and provides realistic recommendations to deal with those local challenges in order to reach practical solutions. One of the most important outputs of this work will be the establishment of a national network to represent all sectors related to the water sector to ensure long-term sustainability.

This comic book is the result of an entire year of joint efforts as part of elbarlament’s dialogue programme Clean Tigris.

In three stories, the book raises awareness among children and adults alike, by telling the tale of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the Middle East. Modern-day Iraq is heavily affected by climate change. In particular, water scarcity and desertification threaten to accelerate political and cultural conflicts. To address this issue, women and men from different regions, social and ethnic backgrounds living and working along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers united behind the project “Clean Tigris – dialogue for sustainable peace in Mesopotamia”.

We believe that a first step to ensuring that our planet remains intact for future generations is to understand the value and importance of water as a limited resource – which is what this book aims to do.

This book would not exist without the support of the ifa, its funding programme zivik, and the funds of the German Federal Foreign Office, who supported the idea for this book in a year of worldwide lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
