Within the framework of the project \u201c<\/span>Clean Tigris- Dialogue Programme for Sustainable Peace in Mesopotamia<\/span><\/a>\u201d elbarlament published a book on sustainable solutions for issues such as climate change, water pollution and conflict due to water scarcity in the Land Between Two Rivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second chapter of the book, Egyptian gender expert Salma Kadry takes a closer\u00a0look at the different gender dynamics in Iraq. While water-related threats\u00a0are pronounced across Iraqi society, their impacts are far from universal:\u00a0water scarcity and its associated threats have important gender dimensions\u00a0that shape how women and men experience and cope with these problems.\u00a0Socially constructed norms and behaviors shape and consolidate structural\u00a0and institutional discrimination and inequalities against women. Salma Kadry\u00a0formulates recommendations on how to integrate women in water-related\u00a0policies and responses and how to transform water-related threats into\u00a0opportunities for advancing gender equality and female empowerment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book<\/a> presents some of the results of an extensive research in 2020. While its goal is to promote environmental awareness in Iraq, it is also a response to the meagre research landscape regarding the water situation in Iraq and the Euphrates and Tigris basin.<\/span><\/p>\n

In total, five contributions will shed light on the rivers in the land of the two streams from different perspectives: we look through a gender lens, discover the field of international conflict resolution, as well as good practices from the Rhine basin, learn about the very first laws on water management in Mesopotamia and travel to Basra to develop a sustainable vision of the southern city.<\/span><\/p>\n
